It is necessary to predict and control quantitatively the bit trajectory in directional drilling. For this reason it is very improtant to determine the values of the side forces, Pa controlling the inclination angle and P_φ co- ntrolling the azimuth angle of the borehole, which act on the bit in an assembly of a down hole motor with a bent-sub (BS-DHM). While a systematic analysis of BS-DHM is still lacking in liternture, the authors have developed the beam-column theory for the analysis of BS-DHM. In this paper a new mechanical model of BS-DHM is established. A general equation about the continuous condition of a continuous beam-column is presented. Two equivalent methods for considering the angle of the bent-sub in BS-DHM are giyen. The equivalent collar assumption of the down hole motor is adopted and its stiffness is determined by mechanical experiments. Generallized coupled equations for 1, 2 or 3 dimensional analysis of BS-DHM with an arbitrary tool face angle Ω are derived. Values of P_α, P_φ and other parameters could be determined by solving the coupled equations. Oil field tests give good agreement between theoretical analysis and practical use.
