This paper demonstrates, from the following 3 aspects, the vitality of STS, as it is often abbreviated in the English speaking world, in meeting the demands of the time. 1) From peace movements and environmental movements to the 2 major themes of the time: peace and development. 2) From science and technology as an inportant factor of productive forces to science and technology as the primary factor of productive forces. And 3) form micro-science to macro-science and to the overlapping of natural and social sciences. It is of great practical significance for the promotion of China's socialist modernization to make a study of "science, technology and society" in the light of China's reality, especially China's tremendous task of reconstruction at the turn of the century.
