Simulations groundwater flow or solute transport by using numerical simulation software is becoming an absolutely necessary way in the groundwater research field. The software of FEFLOW, which is based on the finite element theory, is introduced in detail in this paper. Application areas of FEFLOW involve the simulations of water quantity, water quality and heat. This software provides data interfaces for the geographic information system and can produce spatial finite element grids automatically. It is equipped with fast and precise numeric algorithms to control and optimize the solution procedure, and advanced visual figures are embodied in output results. In addition, it can deals with corresponding hydrogeologic conditions well deal with. The application of FEFLOW to the buildup of a three dimensional groundwater simulation model about the influence zone of the lower Yellow River is illustrated.
