The rate of nitrogen fixation was found to be parallel with the tendency of fresh weight of soybean nodules.The correlation coefficient between nitrogen fixation rate and nodule fresh weight was 0.85.The development of nodules was inhibited by the high concentration of nitrate (over 30 ppm)in water culture solution and the fixation of nitrogen was decreased.The radio activity of the second compound leaf and nodules is higher than that of the stem, cotyledens and roots after labelling with tritium formate on the first compound leaf for 24 hrs. Soybean seedlings were grown in the solution which contained 10 ppm or 75 ppm nitrate. Cation and anion,aspartate and glutamate,malate and citrate were analized.The radio activity in cationic and neutral compound decreased in the order of root,nodules and leaf in the plants with inhibited nitrogen fixation. Serine was the main product of formate assimilation. It was transported from the leaf to the root and then incorperated into other products in the nodules when nitrogen fixation was inhibited by high concentration of nitrate.The results also demonstrats that aspartateglutamate pool was increased and citrate-malate pool was decreased when nitrogen fixation was inhibited in nodules.The relation between carbon and nitrogen,and carbon assimilation pathway of soybean seedlings were discussed in this paper also.
