Mr. Chen Zhen (1894-1957) of Hanjiang County, Jiangsu Province, is a well-known professor, a zoologist, a forerunner in the study of fish heredity, a founder of animal genetics, one of the main founders of the study of animal ethology and the history of Chinese biology. He had studied genetics under Thomas Hunt Morgan (1866-1945) in America in his early years, and enjoyed high reputation in academic circles at home and abroad. He had studied genetics under Thomas Hunt Morgan (1866-1945) in America in his early years, and enjoyed high reputation in academic circles at home and abroad. He had been head of the Department of Biology of Qinghua Uniyersity, member of the first session of the Chinese Commission in the UNESCO, academician of the Central Research institute, director of the Institute of Zoology of Academia Sinica,and member of Academia Sinica in the Department of Biology and Geography. In commemoration of his centennial birthday, this article giyes a brief account of his life, his academic achievements and the characteristics of his scholarship.

This paper is a lecture on Dr. Joseph Needham delivered by the author at the 7th General Assembly of the Academicians of Chinese Academy of Science, June3-8,1994, Beijing, which elected him as one of its first 14 foreign academicians. It briefly describes the academic career of Needham and his contributions to Chinese science.

1994年6月8日,李约瑟博士已在中国科学院第七次院士大会上被选为中国科学院首批外籍院士。中国科学院自然科学史研究所研究员、中国科学院院士席泽宗于投票选举前(6月7日下午),在会上对李约瑟博士的学术生涯及其对中国科学所做的贡献作了简要的介绍。该文为席泽宗教授在会上的发言。
