On the base of theabove reasoning some principles are suggested for the design of the lining andthe reinforcement of the tunnel. A lining with defromable joints especially forlarger overburdens is recommended.

Based upon the safety factor expression of stability stated in literature[3], this paper attempts to establish formulas for solving the critical height of a benched slope and the width of a wedge block which is likely subject to sliding. The problem concerning the safety factor of stability of a three dimensional wedge block sliding proposed by G. L. Fisenko[5] is also discussed and analysed. Further, paper points out that the expressions of stability parameters given in literature[6] seem to be wrong.
