A flash photolysis study of aqueous solutions of tyrosine is presented. It is shown that the photoionization is almost the only mechanism of photolysis of tyrosine in alkaline solution, because equal yields are obtained for the p-alanylphenoxyl radical (Tyr) and the hydrated electron produoed as the initial photoproduots by an intensive flash. A flash photolysis study of aqueous solutions of tyrosine is presented. It is shown that the photoionization is almost the only mechanism of photolysis of tyrosine in alkaline solution, because equal yields are obtained for the p-alanylphenoxyl radical (Tyr) and the hydrated electron produoed as the initial photoproduots by an intensive flash. The dependenoe of Tyr yield on absolute flash intensity (i. e. the number of photons inoident on the irradiated cell per flash) was experimentally determined with exoiting light of 240~370nm. The yield of Tyr is proportional to the flash intensity in alkaline solution, but a nearly quadratic relation is observed in acidic solution. The analysis of suoh dependenoes indioattes that the phottoionization of yrosine is a monophotonio process under alkaline conditions, but a biphotonio process under acidic conditions. From the linear dependence of Tyr yield on flash intensity the quantum yield of Tyr, φ=0.061, is calculated as the average value for the actinic light ranging from 240 to 370 nm.
