In this patper the author gives a brief introduction and analysis of copper resource,and the present condition of its production and consumption at home and abroad,makes a comment on the development and achivement in modern copper—smelting processes and contributes his suggestions of how China's copper industry should be developed when she enters the 21 st century.According to the author's view,we should rationally exploit the national resource of copper mine and,at the same time,import copper concentrate from abroad to meet the increasing demands of copper consumption.As for the copper smelting technology,the author suggestes that we should use flash smelting,molten bath smelting and blast furnace smelting which are all based on the techniques of autogenous smelting and in which enriched oxygen is used.

KSS process was developed and improved based on the KIVCET process (in the former Soviet Union). It consists of flash smelting furnace, electric heated furnace and gas offtake.These three parts are separated by walls. On the top of the furnace there are three jets. The liner of furnace is made of chrome-magnesitic brick and copper water jacket. The water and sulphur content in feed are required as no more than 1% and between 14~16% respectively. The coke proportion should be suitable to keep a layer of carbon with thickness of 100~200mm covering on the smelt. The advantages of the KSS process are compact constructure, good leak proof ability, stable continuous operation, high concentration of sulphur dioxide as being 25%, less pollution, less occupying area and less investment. The recoveries of lead, silver, sulphur and zinc are 98.8%, 98.5%, 96.7% and 50% respectively.

Jinchuan nickel mine is one of the world - famous large scale multi - metal associated copper - nickel sulfide deposits. It was indicated by research results of a pilot and a commercial test that such measures as adoption of high efficient novel collector - frothers AS, CEED, J - 622 etc. developed by our institute, mixed addition of reagents, regrinding of rougher concentrate followed by centralized cleaning, reasonable and suitable ways of dealing with middles were the effective ways of improving the metallurgical performance of nickel ores from Jinchuan mining area No. 2. The research achivements of J - 622 commercial test have been applied in practice. In order to supply the high quality concentrate of which MgO content must be low, another commercial test will be achived according to the pilot test results. Remarkable benifit has been and will be gained in Jinchuan Nonferrous Metals Company.

金川镍矿是世界著名的巨型多金属共生硫化铜镍矿床之一。连选及工业试验结果表明,采用我院研制的AS、CEED、J-622等新型高效捕收起泡剂、混合用药精矿再磨并集中精选及合适的中矿处理方式等技术措施是提高金川二矿区矿石选矿指标的有效途径。J-622工业试验成果已应用于工业生产;连选试验成功并将在现场进行工业试验,为闪速熔炼提供低镁的优质精矿,为金川公司产生明显的经济效益。
