This paper describes the morphogensis and cell differentiation of taste bud based upon 4 embryos of Alligator sinensis. The primordium of taste bud enlarged and its cell quantity increased greatly at the 52nd day of incubation. In the study, we examined the presence of P2X receptor subtypes in the rat taste buds and the adjacent tissues to explore the possible role of ATP in the signal transduction of taste stimuli by using polyclonal antibodies against P2X_1,P2X_2,P2X_3,P2X_4,P2X_5, and P2X_6, receptor subtypes, PAP.immunocytochemistry and gold-silver enhancement of DAB end-products. The results showed that strong staining of P2X_3, immunoreactive fibers were found in the taste buds of circumvallate papillae, fungiform papillae and foliate papillae, and some of these fibers reached the pore of taste buds. In the epithelial layers without taste buds P2X_3, immunoreactive fibers were also found. In the connective tissue of subgemmal regions there were lots of P2X_3, immunoreactive fibers, and some of them collected into a bundle in the basement of taste buds. In the adjacent area of papillae and muscle tissue some nerves with P2X_3, immunoreactivity were found too. The distribution pattern of P2X_2, receptor subtype immunoreactivity was identical to that of P2X_3, but the staining was much weaker. These results suggest that ATP may be a neurotransmitter in taste reception cells in the taste buds, where it transducts the taste signals to the afferent taste nerves by activating P2X receptors at the synapses.
