For spheroidal graphite iron, it has been found that the crack due to thermal shock is a grain boundary one and its resistance to thermal shock is the highest. For lamellar graphite iron, the crack is a transgranular one and the resistance to thermal shock is the lowest. For dendritic graphite iron, the crack is a hybrid one and the resistance is between those of spheroidal and lamellar graphite irons. The resistance can be significantly improved with suitable contents of Cr, Mo and Si in the spheroidal austenitic cast irons.

The paper deals with the wear behaviour of boron-zirconizing layer and boronizing layer of 5CrMnMo steel during abrasive and impact fatigue wear tests. The results show that the wear resistance of the boron-zirconizing layer is superior to that of the boronizing layer under both abrasive wear and impact fatigue wear conditions. The reason is that the brittleness of the boron-zirconizing layer is lower than that of the boronizing layer. Both the boronized sample and the boron-zirconized sample were quenched isothermally....

The results show that the wear resistance of the boron-zirconizing layer is superior to that of the boronizing layer under both abrasive wear and impact fatigue wear conditions. The reason is that the brittleness of the boron-zirconizing layer is lower than that of the boronizing layer. Both the boronized sample and the boron-zirconized sample were quenched isothermally. Their impact fatigue wear resistance can be improved evidently by comparison with that of the same sample without the same processing of isothermal quenching. The result obtained is considered to be the diminution of the residual stress and the strengthening of the transition zone.
