The structural area of them is over one thousand square kilometers except large drape structural belt, large turbidite body-structural combination belt and large platfrom edge reef-sandbody combination belt. The basin has the reservoir grown well from the early stage of Oligocene to Pliocene. coastal bar and the sandbodies of delta river channel and turbidite segment as well as large thickness, wide area and it is stable in lateral. The shale in Meishan formation and the pure shale and argillic horizon of Late Pliocene-Quaternary are the two sets of caprock in the area. It is verified by drilling that oil-gas resources is rich and the both of deep and shallow gas reservoirs are in the basin.

莺歌海盆地是一个在红河地缝合线基础上发展起来的、呈北西向的新生代走滑拉张盆地,面积11.3×104km2,快速热沉降,海相沉积为主,厚度>1.5×104m,具成熟─高成熟的巨厚烃源岩,天然气资源量巨大。盆地发育独具特色,四排南北向大型泥拱背斜带的成因与“泥底辟”作用力有关,其构造面积上千平方公里,世界上实属罕见,另外还有大型披覆构造带、大型浊积体─构造复合带、大型台地边缘生物礁─砂体复合带等构造。渐新世早期至上新世,盆地均发育良好的储集层,有滨岸砂坝、三角洲河道砂及浊积扇等砂体,厚度大、面积广、横向稳定。该区内梅山组泥质岩和晚上新世-第四纪沉积的质纯泥质岩、粘土层为盆地两套区域盖层。钻探证实,区域内油气资源十分丰富,既有深层气藏,又有浅层气藏。
