The focusing curves ( r z ), which higher order mode laser beams(i.e.: the mode TEM 11 、TEM 12 (or TEM 21 )、TEM 22 of Hermitian Gauss beams and the mode TEM 10 、TEM 11 of Laguerre Gauss beams) propagate through a focusing optical system (for example: a pair of lens focusing system), are obtainable on the basis of Huygens Fresnel principle and Sampling theory and by programming , calculating, and making use of Graftool.

By use of Huygens Fresnel principle and sampling theory,the formulas of circular sum for Laguerre Gauss beams propagate through a pair of lens focusing system which can be described by an ABCD ray transfer matrix are derived. The diffraction patterns of Laguerre Gauss beams propagating through above mentioned optical system are calculated by programming.

The expression for axial light intensity distribution of the Bessel-modulated Gaussian beam with Quadratic radial dependence (QBG beam) passing through ABCD focusing system is given in the paper. A study on axial light intensity distribution and focal shift of Bessel-modulated Gaussian beam with quadratic radial dependence passing through the thin lens focusing system is carried out. The cubic equation and analytic solutions fulfilled by the relative focal shift are obtained.

A Nd 3+ ∶YAG laser is pumped by a fiber coupled and GRIN lens focused diode laser and the focal length of the equivalent thermal lens is measured by using unstable cavity method.

A duoplasmatron ion source has been developed for making targets by its focused heavy ion beam sputtering.The argon ion beam of 1~2 mA can be produced and accelerated to a maximum energy of 10 keV.By adjusting the focusing effect of the einzel lens and discharge conditions of the ion source,the diameter of the ion beam spot on the target is minimized to about 2mm (the full width at 1/10 maximum of beam density distribution) and 1 mm (FWHM) .Continual operation times exceed 24 hours.
