Studies on the different fractions of chemical wheat straw pulps obtained through a Bauer-McNett fractions tor reveal that the longer fiber fraction is characterised by its higher cellulose visicosity and higher crystallinity index, even though the percentage of its pentosan component is comparable to that in the classified fraction enriched with non-fiber elements. It is thus observed that the longer fiber fraction not only possesses better morphological properties but also better behaviour in the molecular level.Hand sheets made from longer fiber fractions show higher physical strength properties compared with those made from shorter fiber fractions. Hand sheets prepared from fractions enriched with nonfiber elements are weakest in strength. Degress of brightness of hand sheets prepared from different classified fractions differ to a very great extent, with the longer fiber fractions leading, followed by the shorter fiber fractions and then the fractions enriched with non-fiber elements. A 10. brigtness difference has been observed between the best and the worst.Further experiments are conducted by re-blending the various fractions to give a series of stocks with different composite fractions. Handsheets are prepared from these stocks and their strength properties determined. It is found that handsheet strength increases linearly with the increase of the longer fiber fractions in the stock, whereas fractions enriched with non-fiber elements give negative effect on paper strength. Henceforth, it is estimated that in order to achieve a 10% gain in handsheet strength, about 20% of the non-fiber fraction (by wt based on pulp stock) has to be taken away.Non-fiber elements and fines existing in chemical wheat straw pulps, though to a certain extent much similar to the fine fractions in mechanical wood pulp, behave more closely to those found in chemical wood pulps. It is found that the bulk of straw paper tend to increase as long as the percentage of fines increases in the pulp stock, seemingly without limit bulk as would be the case with mechanical wood pulps. Evidently, strength properties and optical properties will be upgraded if the non-fiber elements are being taken away from straw pulp stocks.

The kinetics of H2O2 bleaching of bagasse pulp has been studied with infrared spectrometry. Changes of chromophore contents in the pulp are observed. A kinetic equation for the H2O2 bleaching of bagasse kraft pulp is proposed,dW/dt = K(H2O2)-1.03.(NaOH)0.49.W-1.30 and the activation energy is found to be 44.7kJ/mol. Apparently, bagasse kraft pulps are more readily bleached than mechanical wood pulps and higher rates of bleaching are obtained for bagasse kraft pulps with additional charges of bleaching agents....

Loss in light absorbing coefficient or gain in brightness would result with decrease in bleaching rate. However, it is observed that such decreases in bleaching rates for bagasse kraft pulp are rather moderate, as bagasse kraft pulps are less sensitive to temperature variations in the bleaching process.lt is further observed that bleaching of bagasse kraft pulps as studied proceeds in tw?stages, namely an initial 10 minutes fast reacting period that lasts till the end of the bleaching. Seemingly the reaction between HOO-, a decomposed product from H2O2,and carbonyl, exsisting in p-hydroxyphenyl unit in lignin is the major reaction responsible for any increase in pulp brightness.
