A generalization of the second-order coupled-wave theory of diffractions on planar dielectric gratings are presented. The theoretical analysis is rigorously based on the static Maxwell's equations. Therefore, it is easy, in principle, to obtain accurate results by following the computational method given by the present paper.

本文在Moharam等人工作的基础上,对现有的平条纹面介质光栅衍射的二阶耦合波理论作了进一步推广。文中理论分析严格地建立在定态麦克斯韦方程组的基础之上。因此,原则上,按照本文所介绍的方法可以借助计算机得到具有任意所需精度的结果。 本文所研究的对象是平条纹面介质光栅。文中除要求光栅介质具有平面等值面及平面表面外,对光栅结构没有其它限制。本文允许照明光波以任意方向入射(特别是,允许入射面与光栅矢量面成任意夹角)。此外,本文还允许入射光具有任意的偏振状态,并以一系列琼斯矩阵表示光栅的衍射特性。这意味着本文把光栅也当作一种偏振元件来处理。

This paper discusses the principle and design of novel millimeter wave DBR(Distriputed Bragg Reflector)Gunn oscillators with experimental results. This paper discusses the principle and design of novel millimeter wave DBR(Distriputed Bragg Reflector)Gunn oscillators with experimental results. The oscillator is based on the dielectric grating theory and coupled mode theory for guided wave optics.The operating principles are quite similar to the DBR lasers developed in integrated optical circuits of recent years.The device is built on an inverted-strip dielectric waveguide.The surface wave stopband phenomena is exhibited due to the coupledmode for providing frequ- ency and mode-selective reflections which produce positive feedback to the diode.It is possible to obtain millimeter wave oscillations with the spectral purity and stability. The oscillator fabricated from the previous principles has an output of 60~90mw and frequency stability 10~(-5) at 36GHz.The experimental results agree reasonably well with the theoretical predictions.

In this article, we introduced this theory systematically. In order to emphasize the equivalence of this theory to vector modal theory in theoritical significance, we started from the solution form of modal theory, detached the propagating constant β_m on the basis of the symmetry of coefficient matrix of modal eigenequation, rewrited the solution of Helmholtz equation in the form of harmonic waves with varying amplitudes. Based on the preceding procedure, we elicited state viables, deduced the equation of state, and then acquired the whole solution of this equation using linear system theory.Coupled wave theory is a method which can be widely used with ease. Since it is based on Fourier analysis approach, its essential problems are how to choose the dimension number and how to accelerate its convergence speed. Two computation examples demonstrated that this theory is valid in computing and analysizing rectangular dielectric gratings, but its convergence speed is rather slow when used to compute TM mode of rectangular metal gratings.

对于特征尺寸是波长或亚波长量级的二元光学器件,耦合波理论是一种严格的矢量衍射分析方法。本文系统地介绍这一理论,为突出其与矢量模态方法在理论意义上的等价,从模态理论解的形式出发,利用模态本征方程系数矩阵的对称性,将传播常数民分离,从而将亥姆霍兹方程的解写成振幅在变化的谐波形式。在此基础上引入状态变量,导出状态方程,并以线性系统理论解出此方程进而得到全解。耦合波理论是一种应用面比较广泛,使用较为简单的方法。由于它是基于付立叶分析的方法,基本问题是维数的选取及收敛性,计算实例表明,这个理论对于矩形介质光栅的计算分析较为有效,而对于矩形金属光栅TM(E模)偏振的计算分析,其收敛是很慢的。
