This paper is an analysis of ten years observation data for field exposure tests of reinforced concrete at Zhangjiang, Shanghai and Tianjin observation stations and illustrates that corrosion of reinforcing steel occurs mainly from the mean high tide level up to a distance of 1.5m above it. Tt shows that there is no or very light corrosion for the steel under and within the tide fluctuating zone. In this paper, various factors of affecting the durability of reinforced concrete such as the cement qualities, the water-cement ratio, the thickness of protecting course, the use of sea sand and sea water in the mix, the curing by sea water, the use of low alloy steel and the use of corrosion retarding agent-sodium nitrite as well as the critical value of the chlorion content that cause the corrosion of steel are discussed. The paper will furnish technical requirement for the durabilities of new reinforced concrete wharves to be built and also will give scientific basis for the further revision of the relevant parts of the current technical specifications for harbor engineering.
