Through the gridical sampling and the research of depositional environments(geography and sediments)of ferromanganese nodules,we conclude that in the“China Pioneer Area”(Northeast Pacific Basin),the distributions of ferromanganese nodules in different depositional environments are different.The spheroidal and ellipsoidal nodules,with smooth surface texture,rich in Mn element group(made up of Mn,Ni,Cu,Zn,Mo and Mg etc.) and poor in Fe element group (including Fe,Co,Pb,Ti,Sr and REEs),are distributed in the seamounts or abyssal hill area,whose water depth is above the CCD.The cauliflower shaped or ellipsoidal nodules,with smooth texture of the top surface and rough texture of the bottom one and rich in Mn and Fe element group,are distributed in the hilly siliceous clay area at or near the CCD and with about 5000—5200m water depth.These nodules are of high economical potential.The bayberry shaped and tabular nodules with rough surface texture and rich in Mn element group,occur in the thickly deposited abyssal plains and hollows of siliceous ooze or clay area.
