The rat soleus muscle(SOL)was given additional innervation from pre-implanted extensor digitorum longns(EDL)nerve during a period of temporarydenervation after crushing its own nerve.In such muscles there were a propor-tion of muscle fibres doubly innervated by both fast-and slow-muscle nerves.Weinvestigated the histochemical type and contractile property of such muscle fibres.The main results are:The SOL muscle fibres with additional innervation from theEDL nerve appeared to preserve their original slow-muscle myofibrillar ATPasehistochemical type.This is so with experiments of very different durations,ranging in time from 20 to 120 days,with one case of 402 days,counting from theday of crushing the SOL nerve as zero.On the other hand,the SOL musclefibres with additional EDL innervation showed a definite increase in their contrac-tion speed,though the increase was not great.Considering the fact that the myo-fibrillar ATPase activity is not the only factor that can affect contraction speed,and that the myofibrillar ATPase histochemical method used may not be adequatefor following relatively small changes in the ATPase activity,the above observa-tions on the histochemical type and on the contractile property are not regardedas incompatible.Although on a single muscle fibre there were two separate end-plates formed respectively by slow-muscle and fast-muscle nerves,the histochemicalstaining appeared to be uniform throughout the whole length of the fibre withno sign of any local difference surrounding each of the endplates.While thisobservation tends to favor the hypothesis that myofibrillar ATPase type is deter-mined by muscular activity,the question whether there is also some specificneurotrophic influence on the contractile system,is left open for the time being,pending further studies using more sensitive and specific methods for detectingdifferences in muscle fibre type.

The method of the paraffined section has been a main technique in studying the structure of plant organism for more than a century. In order to show the structure of the cells, the method of changing light wavelength by removing paraffin in the section and then staining it with dyes is generally used. Recently, we tried to stain the nondepara-ffined sections of plant tissues directly. The results show that the staining effect in the non-deparaffinated sections is as same as in the deparaffinated ones. This method can save a lot of time and chemicals such as alcohol, xylene, etc. and preserve the structure of the cells which are easily lost in deparaffinated sections during staining. This paper recommends the new procedure which we called the staining method for the non-deparaffined section of plant tissues embedded in paraffin.

By using the myofibrillar ATPase(M-ATPase)histochemical method afterboth alkaline(pH 10.4)and acid(pH 4.1)preincubation,the results about thetransformation of soleus muscle(SOL)cross-reinnervated by the nerve originallysupplying the extensor digitorum longus muscle(EDL)and EDL stimulated con-tinuously at 10 Hz are reported in this paper.The results show that the M-ATPaseis capable of showing at least 3 intermediate grades of change in the transformationof the muscle fibre from the typical slow to the typical...

By using the myofibrillar ATPase(M-ATPase)histochemical method afterboth alkaline(pH 10.4)and acid(pH 4.1)preincubation,the results about thetransformation of soleus muscle(SOL)cross-reinnervated by the nerve originallysupplying the extensor digitorum longus muscle(EDL)and EDL stimulated con-tinuously at 10 Hz are reported in this paper.The results show that the M-ATPaseis capable of showing at least 3 intermediate grades of change in the transformationof the muscle fibre from the typical slow to the typical fast type or vice versa,andthat the muscle fibres undergoing-transformation display acid-stable and alkaline-stable M-ATPase simultaneously.Besides,a search on horizontal sections for non-uniformity along the muscle fibre in cross-reinnervated SOL failed to reveal anydifference in histochemlcal staining between the endplate regions and elsewherealong a muscle fibre at any stage of transformation.

本文报告以碱(pH10.4)和酸(pH4.1)预处理的 M-ATP_(ase)组织化学方法,观察大白鼠伸趾长肌(EDL)神经交叉支配的比目鱼肌(SOL)纤维和长期低频(10Hz)间接刺激的 EDL 肌纤维的改造过程。结果表明,纤维从典型慢型至典型快型或相反的改造过程中,按组织化学染色深度至少能分辨出三个过渡等级,在处于过渡之中的同一肌纤维内同时具有耐酸性和耐碱性 M-ATP_(ase)活性。此外,在受交叉神经支配不同阶段的 SOL 平切片上,整根肌纤维的组织化学染色都是均一的,不存在终板区和终板外区域有什么差异。
