    Propagation by grafting is an effective means of protecting watermelon-from soil borne diseases and shorten the rotation cycle.An experiment using 3 varieties of Cucurbita moschata,C.maxima and eagenaria lecantha as stocks was carried out to compare their compatibility and also their effect,on yield.It was found from the results that the lagenaria leucantha stock had the highest compatibility,and Cucurbita moschata stock the poorest.Owing to the fact that the root system of the grafted seedling extended extensively...

    Propagation by grafting is an effective means of protecting watermelon-from soil borne diseases and shorten the rotation cycle.An experiment using 3 varieties of Cucurbita moschata,C.maxima and eagenaria lecantha as stocks was carried out to compare their compatibility and also their effect,on yield.It was found from the results that the lagenaria leucantha stock had the highest compatibility,and Cucurbita moschata stock the poorest.Owing to the fact that the root system of the grafted seedling extended extensively and had strong fertilizer uptaking ability,there were yield increases in varying degree.Results also showed that for the seedless watermelon and tetraploid watermelon,grafting on even more significant yield-increasing effect.The grafting method used was top-grafting,and 600-800 plants could be grafted each person per day.If appropriate measures such as maintain-ning the proper temperature and moisture and shadimg were taken,more than 90% of the grafted plants might survive.

The seed coat is the shell, which will be cast away when being eaten; the kernel is the edible part. The naked kernel gene is first found in China's pumpkin. It is assertained that the character of the naked kernel is controlled by a pair of genes. When these recessive genes are homozygous, the seed has no seed coat. The naked kernel pumpkin is rarely seen in nature. But once it is isolated in...

    The pumpkin ( Cucurbita moschata Duchesne ) seed is generally divided into two parts: the seed coat and the kernel. It is assertained that the character of the naked kernel is controlled by a pair of genes. When these recessive genes are homozygous, the seed has no seed coat. The naked kernel pumpkin is rarely seen in nature. But once it is isolated in a homozygous condition through selfing, the naked kernel character will be stabilized and inherited generation after gener-ation so long as it is planted in the field isolated from the seed-coat variety. The naked kernel character can be transferred to any variety of the Chinese pumpkin species to make its seeds without coats.

    作者于1980年开始进行南瓜地方品种整理工作,通过连续自交,1982年在中国南瓜(Cucurbita maschata Duchesne)系统中首次发现裸仁性状。随后的研究证明,控制中国南瓜种子裸仁或有种皮是一对相对基因,位于同一位点,当这一对基因为隐性纯型合子时,种子即无种皮,只要与有种皮的种隔离种植,即可代代遗传下去。裸仁性状可以转育到任何一个中国南瓜系统的品种上,使其种子成为裸仁。
