In this paper, a classification system for local ring networks is proposed, based on time and space assignments in the ring access protocols. With three classes in both assignments, the system provides a complete and disjoint set of nine categories. Any given ring protocols can precisely be classifiod into one and only one category in the system.As demonstrations, 22 local ring networks reported in the literatures are classified under the new taxonomy.
