Development of 750 kV transmission lines and application of FACTS technique is an important measures to speed up the development of energy resources in Northwest China and realization of power transmission from west to east.
The flexible alternative current transmission system (FACTS) is a new technique which has synthesized the power electronic technique, micro -processing and microelectronic technique, communication technique and control technique and is used for alternative current transmission control. It represents the developing direction of transmission technique. Application of FACTS technique can in- crease the transmission power of the line and improve the reliability of transmission lines.
Application of FACTS technique in the metallurgic distribution system was summarized. Present situation and development direction of FACTS equipment used in the metallurgic distribution system were discussed.

FACTS technology is a new concept originated in 1986. Its definitions and opportunities, background of appearance, limitations and existing problems are stated and analyzed. An improved new definition was proposed also by the author in this paper.
