It is found that the catalytic activity of LaCoO_3 in the CO oxidation may be enhanced by pretreatment of oxidative or reductive atmosphere. Inhibition of nitrogenase activity induced by asparagin (Asn) and glutamine (Gln) appeares to be similar to NH_4~+ switch-off of nitrogenase activity in Rhodopseudomonas capsulata. It was shown that Gln and Asn inhibited the nitrogenase activity, perhaps, by the same mechanism as NH_4~+ in which glutamine synthetase (GS) was involved. The inhibitor of Gln metabolism, 6-diazo-5-oxo-L-norleucine (DON), prolonged the duration of NH_4~+ switch-off. Similarly, the Gin inhibition of nitrogenase activity was intensified...

Inhibition of nitrogenase activity induced by asparagin (Asn) and glutamine (Gln) appeares to be similar to NH_4~+ switch-off of nitrogenase activity in Rhodopseudomonas capsulata. It was shown that Gln and Asn inhibited the nitrogenase activity, perhaps, by the same mechanism as NH_4~+ in which glutamine synthetase (GS) was involved. The inhibitor of Gln metabolism, 6-diazo-5-oxo-L-norleucine (DON), prolonged the duration of NH_4~+ switch-off. Similarly, the Gin inhibition of nitrogenase activity was intensified as well. These may be considered as results from the accumulation of Gln. However, the Gln inhibition of nitrogenase activity was prevented by methionine sulfoximine (MSX), an inhibitor of GS, and in that case the ratio of MSX to Gln concentration was about 0.2 which was similar to that of MSX to NH_4~+ concentration required for MSX to block the NH_4~+ switch-off. The blocking effect of MSX on NH_4~+ switch-off could not be antagonised by DON. This indicated that the Gln inhibition of nitrogenase activity was mediated by GS, nevertheless, the analogue of glutamate, methionine sulfone (MSF), which was unable to inhibit the glutamyltransferase activity of GS, had the same ability as MSX to prevent inactivation of nitrogenase activity caused by Gln and NH_4~+. Possible explanations for this are that MSF occupies the glutamate-site of GS, and much likely prevents special changes in the comformation of GS which initiats the inactivation of nitrogenase. All the above observations with DON, MSX and MSF may be extended to Asn inhibition of nitrogenase activity and agreed with those in Gln and NH_4~+ switch-off.
