A new solid-state laser material——Yb:Y_2O_3 transparent ceramic based on nano crystalline technology and the vacuum sintering (NTVS) method is reported. The manufacture technology, the physical and chemical properties, the energy level split structure and the spectra characteristics of Yb:Y_2O_3 ceramic media are discussed and compared with those of Yb:YAG single crystal.
As a new solid laser material in recent years, Cr4+:YAG crystal has super advantages, such as big absorption cross section, stable saturable absorption, good heat-conducting and mechanical performance.
Several typical solid-state laser materials for DPSSL were summarized. A few Nd-doped laser crystals of series of orthovanadates were mainly mentioned to have excellent laser characteristics, especially for two new crystals of LuVO_4 and GdVO_4 LD pumped microchip lasers.

The recent developments of solid-state laser materials in the respects of high average power,high efficiency,tunable charac- teristics and multiple wavelengths are reviewed and discussed.
From the results of research in rare earth solid state lasers several relavant theoretical and technological problems are discussed. Some comments on rare earth solid state laser materials are also given with 40 references, 3 tables and 7 figures.
The development of the crystal growth technique of the solid state materialshas been reviewed. The growth technique of the several important laser materi-als are introduced. The challenge to the crystal growth by the future prospectof the laser technique is given.
