伍铁平教授这里提出的问题是:“语言不能部分地改革吗?”这是一件敏感的事儿:提“语言改革”,易遭非议。联系到1980年,在斯大林为“思维与语言关系”定调30年之后,是伍教授继周建人先生之后在国内提出了一个“犯上”的问题:语言和思维孰先孰后?(见《语言与思维关系新探》,1990年增订2版,上海教育出版社)这引发了语言和思维关系讨论的再度兴起,说明伍教授的这种理论勇气在语言学界是很需要的。本文的落脚点并不在号召人们进行语言改革,而在引起人们对语言缺项所产生的有趣现象加以注意,可见作者的慎重。由语言缺项现象出发,伍教授指出:语言并非是一个组织得很好的系统,也不是一个组织得不好的系统。同任何发展中的事物一样,语言也是在不断地保持平衡和有序与打破平衡和有序中前进的。这个意见在哲学上是站得住脚的。
