This paper presents some design criteria for voltage dividers used for internal overvoltage measurements in HVDC systems. Technical data of 6 developed voltage dividers are presented together with their frequency-responses, voltage-dividing ratioes under DC voltage and switching surges. At last the paper makes a very brief description of the on-site measurements of internal overvoltages of the 6 voltage dividers during the system tests of the Gesha HVDC project.

In the past accidents of XLPE cables were inspected by exerting DC voltage on the cables after outage. This method would damage the cables due to destruction of insulation. In order to solve this problem an on-line inspecting instrument was successfully developed by Shanghai Cable Institute and Baoshan Iron and Steel Company. The instrument will not damage cable insulation during inspection. The instrument is presented in this paper.
