The anode effect is a characteristic phenomenon in molten salts electrolysis, especially in aluminium electrolysis. When it occurs,there appear many small electric sparks on the anode,and the cell voltage increases suddenly.In this paper the anode effect was studied by means of cathode-ray oscillography. The back electromotive force of the aluminium electrolysis cell with various kinds of anode materials(carbon, graphite, platinum and other inert materials)was measured,It was clearly observed that a series of electrochemical decomposition processes took place when the anode effect occurred on carbon anodes. The values of back EMF of these processes were in the range of 1.0-5.5V. These were checked with thermodynamics calculations. A direct short circuit of current from anode to cathode was also observed during the whole process of the anode effect.These phenomena were compared with those observed on microelectrolysis cells, and the mechanism of the anode effect was suggestsd.

Anodic processes, occurring on the carbon anode in aluminium electrolysis , have ever attracted much more attention . They are of very important theoretical interest and are closely related with energy consumption in aluminium eletrolysis. However, the mechanism of their occurrence is still not very clear. An extensive study of such complicated processes as the discharge of anions on carbon anode and the anode effect is made and presented in this paper.Summary. The electrochemical reactions occurring on the carbon anode were studied with a potential sweep technique, and the voltage and current waves before and after the anode effect were observed on the screen of a cathode ray oscillograph. There were three current peaks in the potential sweep range of 0~5V. The peak voltages were as follows: Ep1 = 1.6V, Ep2=2.2V, EP3=3. 8V. These peak voltages correspond to the following electrochemical reactions respectively: discharge of oxygen ions, co discharge of oxygen and fluorine ions and discharge of fluorine ions. In the reversing sweep, however, there was no cathodic current. Therefore these three reactions are all irreversible. In the alumina concentration range of 0~1.5%(wt.), the critical current density for anode effect is determined by ip2, while the alumina concentration exceeded 2%(wt.) it is determined by ip1. Hence it is suggested that there may be a boundary line in the structure of cryolite-alumina melts at alumina concentration of 2%(wt.). On the basis of the experimental results obtained, the mechanism of anodic processes on carbon anode is discussed.
