A new photochemical-fluorimetric method for the determination of trace nitrite in natural water, using rivanol as reagent, has been developed. It has high sensitivity, good reproducibility and selectivity. This method is based on the facts that under the irradiation of a high-pressure mercury lamp a photochemical reaction between rivanol and nitrite occurs in 0.2mol/L HCl medium and fluorescence intensity of the product is directly proportional to the concentration of nitrite when measured at λ_(ex)=346nm and...

A new photochemical-fluorimetric method for the determination of trace nitrite in natural water, using rivanol as reagent, has been developed. It has high sensitivity, good reproducibility and selectivity. This method is based on the facts that under the irradiation of a high-pressure mercury lamp a photochemical reaction between rivanol and nitrite occurs in 0.2mol/L HCl medium and fluorescence intensity of the product is directly proportional to the concentration of nitrite when measured at λ_(ex)=346nm and λ_(em)=490nm. The calibration curve is linear in the concentration range of 0. 1~10ng/ml for NO_2~-, the relative standard deviation is 0. 96%, and the limit of detection is O.l0ng/ml. When a high-pressure mercury lamp is used as excitation source for measuring fluorescence intensity, the linear range of the calibration curve is O~100ng/ml for NO_2~- and the limit of detection is 0. 94ng/ml. This method has been applied to determine the nitrite in pool-water and sea-water samples with satisfactory results. The recovery of standard addition is from 94% to 102%.

A new catalytic-kinetic photochemical fluorimetry for the determination of Cr(Ⅵ) in water is discrtibed. The method is based on the catalytic effect of Cr(Ⅵ) on the photo-oxidation reaction of Rivanol.
