Kinematic vorticity is a measurement of the non coaxiality in progressive deformation. With this theory, decomposing the strain in a ductile shear zone and defining the shearing type which formed the shear zone are new subjects for structural geology. The polar Mohr diagram is suitable for both coaxial and non coaxial deformation and, therefore, is a powerful tool for strain analysis. Kinematic vorticity is a measurement of the non coaxiality in progressive deformation. With this theory, decomposing the strain in a ductile shear zone and defining the shearing type which formed the shear zone are new subjects for structural geology. The polar Mohr diagram is suitable for both coaxial and non coaxial deformation and, therefore, is a powerful tool for strain analysis. It is especially useful for obtaining the kinematic vorticity from the measured strain data of a general shear zone. This paper, briefly and systematically, discribes the theory of kinematic vorticity, deduces the principle of polar Mohr diagram and sets forth their applications.

Through the analysis of statics by combining with dynamics, the initial angle between conjugate extensional crenulation cleavages (eccs) gained by the author is 109° 28′, which comes well up to the field data. The orientation of the conjugate eccs depends on the contemporary shear type. In the pure shear case, conjugate eccs are symmetric about the mylonitic foliation, but in the general shear case they are asymmetric about it. The angle between the synthetic ecc and the mylonitic foliation ranges from -9°44′to...

The angle between the synthetic ecc and the mylonitic foliation ranges from -9°44′to 35°16′, depending on the simple shear component relative to the pure shear one. The synthetic eccs usually develop better than the antithetic ones. The trend of the P shear with opposite shear sense may constrain the development of the antithetic eccs. The propagation of synthetic eccs is probably an effective mechanism for the development of the low angle normal faults.
