Changes of the. fluorescence spectra from a good solvent to poor solvents (dichloroethane-methanol mixture), and from dilute to concentrated solutions up to the solid film confirmed that excimer formation exists between nonadjacent...

A butadiene-styrene copolymer of low styrene content (5%, Wt.) has been characterized by 1H NMR to have only isolated styrene units on the chain. The fluorescence spectra of the sample in dilute solutions of a good solvent (dichloroethane) at 25-26℃ showed monomer fluorescence only. Changes of the. fluorescence spectra from a good solvent to poor solvents (dichloroethane-methanol mixture), and from dilute to concentrated solutions up to the solid film confirmed that excimer formation exists between nonadjacent chromophores in the chain and between interchain chromophores. Com-parision of the spectra obtained from a dilute 8-solution and solid film gave us an estimation of the relative importance of the intrachain excimer interaction and interchain excimer interaction in the solid sample studied. These results may help us to visualize the interpenetration and entanglement of polymer coils during transition from a dilute solution to a concentrated one and to a solid polymer.

A series of polymethylene-bis-β-naphthoates and bis-β-naphthyl alkanes and their derivatives have been synthesized and their fluorescence spectra have been studied.Intramolecular excimer formations have been observed in all cases. In the case of polymethylene-bis-β-naphthoates, the excimer fluorescence intensities are related to methylene chain lengths. The fluorescence intensity of the one with trimethylene chain is the strongest. In the case of substituted bis-β-naphthyl alkanes, by introducing electron-attracting groups in the side chain, the electron densities of the two naphthalene rings become unequal. The λ_(max) values of the fluorescence emissions of the intramolecular excimers are blue shifted in comparison with the unsubstituted 1, 3-bis-β-naphthyl propane. The λ_(max) values of the excimers remain unaltered, but the I_E/I_2 values decrease with the increase of solvent polarity. So that, their properties shown do not completely resemble that of the typical excimers nor that of the typical exciplexes.

For the solution of the polymer 1 in a good solvent, chloroform, the transition from dilute to semi-dilute and to concentrated regimes have been located by the change of ratio of the intensities of excimer fluorescence to monomer fluorescence with concentration. The critical concentration C_s of the transition from dilute to semi-dilute regime was found to be 0. 26g/dL, which has been interpreted as the concentration of dynamical contact of the polymer coils in the solution. The transition concentration C~+ from semi-dilute to concentrated regime was found to be 7g/dL. In the solid film of 1, experimental evidence for the direct excitation of the excimer fluorescence from ground state excimer sites has been obtained.
