Localized observation on salt content in protected soil under plastic shed was carried out in some vegetable gardens of Shanghai county.It was found that the salt content in protected surface soil under plastic shed was commonly higher than in exposed surface soil and increased with years.The salt contentin surface soil under five-year shed protection was four to five times higher than in exposed surface soil.Salt movement was closely related to the change in soil water.When uncovered in summer,the soil was obviously desalinized by rain- fall leaching.However,it was not desalinized completly and the salt content rised again when soil was covered with the plastic shed and cultivated. The reasons for the salt accumulation in surface soil under the shed protection were as follows:vaporation capacity in soil under shed protection was twice higher than in exposed soil;soil water moved mainly from bottom to top;excess- ive fertilizer application caused nutritional disorder by increasing NO_3~- content to a level harmful to crop.Thus limiting amount of fertilizer applied and sur- face soil evaporation as well as adjusting irrigation and drainage are the impor- tant measures to solve the salt accumulation problem being harmful to crop.
