In this communication, studies on the action of LATS-IgG on isolated thyroid gland from normal mice are presented. The two lobes of thyroid gland from each mouse were separated into two groups and incubated in Earle's medium. To one group LATS-IgG was added and to the other normal IgG was added as a control. After inoubation, it was found that (1) the iodine uptake by the thyroid, (2) the conversion of inorganic into organic iodine, (3) the thyronine synthesized and (4) the thyroid peroxidase activity in the LATS-IgG group were 37%,85%, 2.5 times and 3 times higher, respectively, than those of the control group.The effect of LATS-IgG on the release of T_3 and T_4 by the isolated thyroids was also studied. When compared with normal human serum, LATS-IgG serum resulted in a 10 times increase of T_3 and T_4. In another experiment, mice were injected with ~(125)I. Two hours later their thyroids were taken out and inoubated in Earle's medium. After incubation, it was found that in the LATS-IgG group the radioactivities of T_3 and T_4 were 16.6% and that of inorganio iodine 83.4% of the total activities, respectively, whereas in the control group they were 2.1% and 97.9%, respectively. These results indicated that LATS not only increases the total thyroid release but also affects the composition of the components secreted. Thus, our results may account for, at least in part, the pathogenesis of Graves' disease.

In our experiments we found that thyroid was excited by iodine intake,th-en the level of T_3 and T_4 rose,consequently excessive organic iodine accum-ulated in thyroid and resulted in pressure inhibition of the glands and impair-ment of synthesis of organic iodine。Based upon the plenty data in our experiments,we try to make our ideaas follows.1 Nonorganic iodine excites thyroid then increases the secretion of T_3and T_4 and enhances the synthesis of organic iodine.2 The accumulation of excessive organic iodine in thyroid results inpressure-inhibition of the gland which inhibits the secretion of T_3 and T_4。3 Long continuous administration of iodine is liable to inhibit iodinetransport of thyroid.
