Melt flow control in a multistrand tundish using a turbulence inhibitor
      
Three different cases were studied: a bare tundish (BT), a tundish with two pairs of baffles and a waved impact pad (BWIP), and a tundish equipped with turbulence inhibitor and a pair of dams (TI>amp;amp;D).
      
The use of a turbulence inhibitor yields plug flow volume fractions well above 40 pct for a casting rate of 3.12 tons/min under isothermal conditions.
      
For the bare tundish case, the inertial forces are strongly dominant, while in the arrangement using flow control devices, tundish with turbulence inhibitor and low dams, the buoyancy forces are dominant.
      
Similarly, RTD curves were obtained for tundish operations without and with a dam+turbulence inhibitor device (TID).

A new flow control device, turbulence inhibitor, has been developed for the tundish of slab continuous casting in No.2 Steelmaking Plant, AISCO by experiments. It has been confirmed after one year application that the turbulence inhibitor can not only avoid molten steel from oxygen and nitrogen adsorption due to melt splashing in the filling of tundish, but also, more important, apparently remove inclusions from molten steel. Therefore, slab quality can been improved greatly.

结合鞍钢第二炼钢厂板坯中间罐控流装置,通过实验室对比试验研究,开发了一种新型控流装置——湍流控制器。一年来的应用实践表明,它不仅具有防止开浇喷溅而引起钢液吸氧吸氮作用,更重要的是在浇注过程中有明显地去除夹杂物的作用。因此显著地提高铸坯质量,降低夹杂废品。

A water model experiment has been done to optimize the flow control unit in slab continuous casting tundish in Angang No.2 Steelmaking Plant. Partition wall and turbulence control unit with reasonable structure are found to be able to obviously improve the fluidity of fluid in tundish, make the liquid surface over the flow field at ladle long nozzle more stable as well as reduce the corrosion of refractory by ladle draining.

对鞍钢第二炼钢厂板坯连铸中间包进行了控流装置优化的水模实验 ,发现结构合理的挡墙和湍流控制器能够明显改善中间包内的流体流动特性 ,使钢包长水口注流区上方的液面更加平稳 ,并且减轻钢包注流对耐火材料的冲刷与侵蚀。
