A study was made on the heritability of major economic charactersin F_3 and F_4 progenies of rice hybrids raised under different methodsof breeding.The results are summarized as follows:1.The effectiveness of bulk method of breeding depends to a greatextent on the intensity of selection of individual plants in hybridpopulations.As heritability estimates from the bulk method of breed-ing were still low even in F_4 owing to high values of M(E/D) and K(H/D)in the components of population,selection intensity for thecharacters with low heritability should be lowered to a reasonableextent.2.In the pedigree method of breeding selection of groups andfamilies usually commences with F_4 progenies.Among the 5 crossesstudied heritability estimates in most cases were higher betweengroups and lower between families within groups.Therefore in the selection of F_4 progenies emphasis should generally be laid on groups,i.e.selection among groups rather than among families.However,comparatively high heritabilities within groups for all characters in-vestigated were observed in the distant varietal cross 853/Norin 20,and in such instance selection of families within groups should be ofprimary importance.3.For most characters studied correlations between F_(2-2) and F_(2-1)and regressions of F_(2-2) on F(2(?)1)were significant at either P_(0.05) or P_(0.01)level,indicating that selection of F_2 derived lines was effective anddesirable(Note:F_(2-2)and F_(2(?)1)represent second generation and firstgenerafion families of F_2 derived lines respectively).4.It should be noted that heritability valuse of a character variedwith the methods of estimation used and the reliability of heritabilityestimates could be detemined by comparing the genetic gains predictedwith those actually obtained in the selection experiment.In the pre-sent study,heritability estimates for early generations from both cor-relation and regression formulae were shown to be more reliable thanother methods.When the environmental conditions between parentand progeny generations were more or less alike,regression methodwould be more accurate than correlation method;otherwise correla-tion method tended to be more practical.

Satisfactory results have been obtained in establishing the general medium for anther and tissues of cereals on the basis of experiment through regulating the major elements (using NH_4H_2PO_4 insteads of (NH_4)_2SO_4 and KH_2PO_4 in N_6 medium), supplemented with a complex of initiation factors (NAA 4 mg/l, 2,4-D 1 mg/l, Kinetin 1-3 mg/l) as well as the synergistical constituents (LH 300 mg/l, DNA 20-25 mg/l).

The isozyme patterns of asterase in seedlings of F1 hybrids of 40 rice crosses were analysed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and starch gel electrophoresis. Of the 40 rice crosses, 15 were used to study the relationship between isozyme patterns and hete-rosis.
