Marketing is a developing tendency of academic journals. The spreading of scientific information and the spreading of advertising information are the two important functions of the academic journals. For the purposes of adapting to the market economy and letting the academic journals get out of the difficulties, these two functions must be separated and then recombined. The journal publishers in the same or similar specialties may combine and set up two service departments : research information and advertising...

Marketing is a developing tendency of academic journals. The spreading of scientific information and the spreading of advertising information are the two important functions of the academic journals. For the purposes of adapting to the market economy and letting the academic journals get out of the difficulties, these two functions must be separated and then recombined. The journal publishers in the same or similar specialties may combine and set up two service departments : research information and advertising information. The former can be run as a public institution, and the later run as a company. After the separation and the recombination of the functions, the government administration will be more direct and the policies concerning the different functions will be made and implemented much easier. The other effects of the separation and the recombination include: the journals' quality will be guaranteed, and their social and economic benefits will be increased simultaneously; there will be more cooperation and less competition between journals so that the journal resources can be rationally allocated and effectively used.
