Jazz is a historical novel as well as a novel on history. It keeps a record of part of American history,Harlem Renaissance, through which Morrison's original understanding of history is revealed. In this novel, split characters, the technique of jazz in writing, and unreliable first person narrative all seem to be disconnected with history and irrelevant among themselves. Nevertheless, they are involved into the black narrative discourse strategy and contribute to Morrison's ponderation over history.
