    One of key research issues in Reverse Engineering is the geometric modeling of complex surface. Extracting boundary of complex surface from "points cloud" is a main step. It gives a practical method of boundary extracting from scattered and unstructured "points cloud". Firstly, a polyline can be obtained from the points set under the meshing, then the polyline is taken as an elastic band and smoothed with energy-minimum. An example is presented to verify the presented method.

We point out that current data acquistion techniques still l ack practical solutions, the shortcoming of geometric model reconstruction is to consider isolated surface patch fitting and neglect the constraints relationshi p and geometric feature of the object. Because the majority of parts are designe d with intended feature and geometric relationship, an important object in model s reconstruction is to resume those feature and geometric relationship. Subseque ntly the key technology of shape data measurement and surface fitting are propos ed. Specific problems further solved include multiple views data registration, t he probe(CMM) 3D compensation, symmetry datum plane reconstruction, and feature -based model reconstruction strategies. Finally, in order to develope reverse e ngineering technology into an applied tool, the sophisticated commercial softwar e which integrate reverse engineering should be developed.
