From 1940 when its first edition of chinese version was published to 1991 when the Chinese version of its sequel "Scarlett" came out, it gained a mixed reception and caused a big controversy in the domain of literary criticism in our country. Since 1950's, the discussions have been held, all centering around the American Civil War, the attitude towards slavery and the creation of the principal character Scarlett O'Hare. However, as a literary work, the novel is weak in its criticising the slavery system. but its description of the economic collapse of slave holders which accelerates the mililary defeat and Scarlett O'Hara who becomes more and more bourgeoisified, truely displays the historical tendency of the collapse of slavery. The value of such insight can never be overestimated.
