The influence of cetane number on the ignition and combustion of diesel fuel ind.i.diesel engine is briefly reviewed.Experimental results showing the effects of ce-tane number of diesel fuel on the ignition delay,peak cylinder pressure,maxmium rateof pressure rise,etc.are given.It is concluded that the ignition delay increases sharplyand the ignition and combustion characteristics deteriorate rapidly,when the cetane num-ber of diesel fuels is lowered below 45.

This paper presents the properties and performance of type CT--878 ceta-ne number (CN) improver synergically developed by Shengli Refinery and Xi-an Institute of Modern Chemistry. For diesel fuels from Shengli crude, the CNcan be increased by 4--6 units with the addition of 0. 2 wt% CT--878 whilethe carbon residue and gum still meet the requirement of specification GB252, The performance of CT--878 varies with the composition of diesel fueland the increase in CN can be predicted with an empirical formula.
