The hyration of 1,4-dioxane has been studied by FT-IR spectra using substrac-tion technique. It was found that the absorbance of substraction spectra increase considerably with the water content in the solvent, while the characteristic frequencies of the solvent change only slightly. The observed changes were explained by the formation of the hydrogen bond between H2O and each of the O atoms of the dioxane molecule. The increase in absorbance of these bands is due to the increase of those molecules which have formed hydrogen bond with water. The hydration of pyridine was also investigated by the same technique and the changes in frequencies and absorbances of substraction spectra were explained through the formation of hydrogen bond with water.
