The middle and upper Paleozoic strata are well-developed in W. Qin Ling range, especially in the Luqu-Dipu region of Gansu province, where except the break (nondeposition) between the lower and middle Devonian, the Silurian to Permian form a continuous sequence marked by distinct succession and contain abundant fossils, and in fact it serves as an ideal region for the study of the middle and upper Paleozoic.This paper reports the regional stratigraphical subdivisions and stratigraphical units proposed for the Paleozoic of W. Qin Ling range and deals with the criteria for stratigraphical subdivision and correlation on the basis of lithofacies and biotic characters, subdividing the Silurian-Permian sequence into over twenty biotic assemblages, the majority of which may be taken as regional zonal fossils.So far as the types of deposits and biotic assemblages are concerned, the Paleozoic of W. Qin Ling range belongs basically to the S. China type. The Silurianmiddle Devonian sequence is composed chiefly eritic deposits, with its biota comparable to that of S. China, Central Asia and E. Europe. The upper Devonian- Permian sequence is divisible into two distinct types of depositions: the southern area type belonging to the S. China type shows definitely more regionalism while the northern area type resembling that of the southern slope of Qilian Shan is transitional in character.

Beishan Mt.is the eastern extension of Tianshan Mts.Where the Upper Precambrian is well developed with continuous outcrops,rather complete succession,abundant stromatolites and typical glacial deposits.It possesses some characteristics of the two Upper Precambrian stratotypes in China, i.e.the Jixian and the Yangtze Gorge sections,and can be regarded as one of the best developed region of the Upper Precambrian in China. A complete Upper Precambrian succession had been compiled to form a space-time continuum from four representative sections namely,Baihu,Ping- toushan,Dahuoluoshan and Hongshankou,then,this succession is divided into four Systems(Groups)and twelve Formations according to lithological character,sedimentary cycle,biotic assemblage,crustal disturbances,glacia- tion,geochemistry and ore-bearing horizons.The total thickness is larger than 8200 m.The features of these stratigraphic units are briefly given in ascending order as follows: The Baihu Group:This Group is composed of littoral-neritic sediments which have suffered low to medium grade metamorphism and it is assigned to Changcheng System.Its rocks.are originally,from base to top,coarse fragmental,carbonate and argilliaceous sediments intercalated with volca- nics in the upper part.These rocks constitute a complete sedimentary cycle and can be divided into four Formations.They yield stromatolites(Kussie- lla-Conophyton Assemblage I)in the upper part and are more than 3269 m in thickness with base being hidden. The Pingtoushan Group:It corresponds to the Jixian System and belongs to tidal flat sediments comprising mainly carbonate of littoral to neritic fa- cies,intercalated with clastics.It can be subdivided into three Formations and contains abundant stromatolites(including Canophyton-Pseudocryptozoon- Baicalia Assemblage Ⅱ,Cryptozoon-Jacutophyton-Baicalia-Petaliforma Assem- blage Ⅲ,Omachtenia-Tielingella-Conophyton Assemblage Ⅳ).It is marked by disconformable contact with the Baihu Group,locally even by angular contact. It has a thickness of 3075 m. The Dahuoluoshan Group:This Group is also tidal flat sediments of littoral to neritic facies,and consists mainly of carbonate rocks with minor clastic and chert beds It comprises three Formations—the lower,the middle and the upper,all being rich in stromatolites(containing Conicodomenia-Jacutophyton- Cono ph yton-Clava ph yton Assemblage Ⅴ ,Jacutophyton-Boxonia-Gymnosolen-Xin- jiangella Assemblage Ⅵ,Inzeria-Linella Assemblage Ⅶ,and Giganstraticonus -Conophyton-Coronaconophyton-Spicaphyton Assemblage Ⅷ).Its contact with Pingtoushan Group displays an unconformity or a disconformity,totaling 1575 m in thickness.This Group is referned to Qingbaikou System. The Hongshankou Group,This Group is composed mainly of glacial deposits having a thickness of 315 m.It overlies the Dahuoluoshan Group unconformably and underlies the lower Cambrian disconformably.It is divisible into lower and upper Formation.The lower Formation is referred to tillite with plenti- ful evidences,e.g.striated pebbles,erratics,especially dropstones from flo- ating ice.But the upper Formation is made up chiefly of clastics,intercala- ted with carbonates and manganese ore-beds,containing microflora and sponge spicules. From the above mentioned data the Baihu,Pingtoushan and Dahuoluo- shan Groups can basically be correlated with the Jixian Section;the Hong- shankou Group may well be analogous to the XiadongSection,but the Deng- ying Formation in the upper part and the Liantuo Formation in the lower part are lacking.Taking the whole stratigraphic style and sedimentary chara- cteristics into account,the Upper Precambrian is rather similar to that of South Urals. It is noteworthy that a stromatolite assemblage which may represent a higher horizon is particularly developed in the upper Formation of the Da- huoluoshan Group.Whether it belongs to a hiatus above the Qingbaikou Sys- tem or makes up another type of sediments of the Lower Sinian is still a pending problem for further study.This assemblage is distinguished by vari- ous conical stromatolites and their derivation type with giant strata-conical stromatolite in the lower part and repeated appearance of the conical columns of unbranehing to varied branching type in the upper part.These columns observed at this locality are preserved by silification,early diagenetic silica having replaced most,or virtually all,of the carbonate of which they were originally composed,after leaching out of enclosing light gray dolomite, these columns protrute from weathered rock surface and occur as“rivet-li- ke”mounting into the dolomite(so called“rivet structure”).It is so distinct in aspect and stable in horozon that somegeologists often use it as guide for stratigraphic correlation. In this article stromatolites collected from the main sections of the study area in Beishan have been studied in detail.The authors have referred to Zhao Wenjie,Miao Changquan,Gao Zhenjia and another positive result in this research book in recent years and are deeply indebted to Liang Yuzuo for his kind direction.Stromatolites described here comprise 28 Groups(Genera) and 70 Forms(Species),among which 7 Groups and 28 Forms are new.

本报告系统地介绍了北山地区所建立的晚前寒武纪地层系统和剖面。根据岩石特征、沉积旋回、生物组合、地壳运动、冰川作用、地球化学和同位素地质年龄等,将其划分为四个系(群)和十二个组。分别论述了各群、组的主要特征、重要地层界线及时代划分与对比;探讨了该区晚前寒武纪古地理概况。尤其是着重解决了该区长期悬而未决的青白口系问题。提出了该区上前寒武系可分别与我国蓟县和峡东以及苏联的南乌拉尔剖面进行对比.本研究报告是对北山地区上前寒武系研究较系统而全面的总结。经地质矿产部科技司和中国地质科学院组织的评审认为,该报告“较大地提高了研究地区的地质研究程度,是一份较有价值的研究成果”.可供地质普查勘探、教学和科研人员参考.

The geological informations of sedimentary strata in Kunming Basin are collected and analysed relatively comprehensively in this article. The article proves that the forming age of Kunming Basin is Quaternary Period, and main coal-bearing sedimentation began in Mid-pleistocene Epoch, according to the following data: the age value of bottom boundary of the sedimentary strata is 400,000 years (Palaeomagnetic data); strata in the south of this basin contain abundant animal fossils of early Pleistocene Epoch and the mammal fossils (both are cave deposits) of Mid-late pleistocene have been found in the Dianchi drainage area; sporopollen assemblages in basin sedimentary strata are quite similar to those of modern vegetation; and the lithogenic and coal-forming degrees of the sedimentary strata in the basin are lower than those of typical sedimentary strata of Tertiary system, etc. Stratigraphic succession of Cenozoic in Kunming Basin are built up preliminary and six lithological member, the main units of which are Songhua coal-bearing formation of Mid-pleistocene series and Kunming coal-bearing formation of late Pleistocene series, are established. The total thickness of these sedimentary strata is more than 1000m.

本文对昆明盆地沉积层地质资料作了较全面的收集和综合分析。根据古地磁资料,昆明盆地沉积层底界年龄值为四十万年;盆地南部含有丰富的早更新世动物化石和滇池流域已发现有中——晚更新世哺乳动物化石(均为洞穴堆积);盆地沉积层中的孢粉组合与本区现代植被十分接近,以及盆地沉积层成岩、成煤程度低于典型的第三系沉积层等事实,论证了昆明盆地形成时期为第四纪,主要含煤沉积开始于中更新世。初步建立了昆明盆地新生代地层系统,确立了第四系中更新统松华含煤组及上更新统昆明含煤组为主体的六个岩性段。沉积层总厚度大于1000米。
