Electric arcs in combustible gas mixtures, as a high temperature source in combustion and plasma technology, have a great deal of advantages in comparison with those in noble gases. In this paper the influence of the mixing ratio, mass flow rates and arc current on the voltage of longitudinally blown arcs in LPG-air mixtures with fixed arc lenth has been studied. In experiments it was observed, that the arc voltage in combustible mixtures is almost 3/2 time of that of pure N2 or air under the same conditions, and that for constant current and mass flow rate as equivalence ratio a increased from 0 to 3, the arc voltage rapidly decreased at first, then almost kept unchanged or slightly increased, and finally fall down to a value corresponding to that of pure air. It was also observed, that on the cathod tip may deposit a stable graphite layer, protecting the cathode from further erosion. In theoretical analysis have been proposed the basic equations of a reacting multicomponent two-demensional axisymmetric MHD flow with arc heating, its three-zone simplified model solution and four-zone model solution. Based on the theoretical analysis, it can be concluded, that the S-shaped relationship of U with a is probably the combined effect of transport properties of gas mixtures and endothermic reactions, which raise the - enthalpy of the gas mixtures to a higher value than that of pure air.
