There have been dramatic advances in the techniques for cooling and trapping neutral atoms using laser light. In particular, the use of inexpensive diode laser and the vapor-cell trap have significantly reduced the complexity and cost for trapping atoms. Atomic densities of~1011 atoms/cm3 have been obtained with temperatures of a small fraction of a millikelvin. In this article, we describe the laser trapping techniques and discuss the current applications of this technology, covering from frequency and wavelength standards to basic physics research, and give the preliminary results of a cesium fountain frequency standard.

The experimental result of laser trapping of rubidium atoms is reported. The frequency of a diode laser is stabilized by means of saturated absorption spectroscopy. The linewidth of laser frequency is less than 1 MHz, and the offsetting of laser frequency can be controlled freely by using acousto optical modulator. It satisfied the requirement of laser cooling and trapping of atoms.

用饱和吸收光谱法对二极管激光器进行稳频 ,使激光器的有效线宽小于 1MHz,并利用声光调制器使激光的频移量得到控制 ,满足了激光冷却与囚禁原子对激光频率稳定性和频移量的要求 ,实现了 Rb原子的激光囚禁。
