This paper summarizes Java's compiler technology, and sorts all kinds of Java compilers into five categories: compilers with interpreter technology, compilers with JIT compiler technology, compilers with adaptive optimization technology, native compilers and translators. Their architectures and working principles are described and analyzed in detail. The authors also analyze the effect that compiler technology has on Java performance.

Java is widely used in many fields because its advantages in many ways. In embedded systems, Java is required greatly too, but the conventional chips cannot meet the needs of running Java byte codes in embedded systems, so the special Java enhanced embedded chips are valuable. Although there are already several Java chips, the problems such as poor Java performance or complex hardware prevent them from being applied in embedded systems where Java is needed. This paper analyzes the disadvantages of nowadays...

Java is widely used in many fields because its advantages in many ways. In embedded systems, Java is required greatly too, but the conventional chips cannot meet the needs of running Java byte codes in embedded systems, so the special Java enhanced embedded chips are valuable. Although there are already several Java chips, the problems such as poor Java performance or complex hardware prevent them from being applied in embedded systems where Java is needed. This paper analyzes the disadvantages of nowadays Java virtual machine's hardware implementations, brings forward the idea of using thin Just In Time compiler (JIT) in the embedded Java chip core——JC401, which is a Java chip developed by our team aiming at the embedded Java applications. This core supports Java virtual machine and JIT compiler in hardware to simplify the JIT compiler and reduce the JIT's total run time and memory cost, and support some performance critical instructions of Java virtual machine efficiently. The JC401 core also reduces the memory footprints greatly by the instruction compress technology. We have finished a RTL level VHDL model, which has passed the validation simulation. In order to compare the performance between JC401 and other products such as picoJava II, we selected a set of typical benchmarks and developed a series of simulation models of other products, and tested the performance of JC401's JIT compiler and the compiled native codes of Java byte code programs. According the results of tests, JC401 achieves better Java performance and native performance, and its memory cost is decreased significantly. So JC401 is more suitable for embedded applications, and can be used in many embedded systems, especially in the networked devices. At last, this paper gives some examples of JC401's application in embedded systems, such as set top boxs and mobile consumer electronic devices, and prospects the great market value of JC401 core.

首先分析了目前 Java的应用情况 ,指出嵌入式 Java芯片具有很大的市场需求 ,然后结合嵌入式系统的特点简单分析了当前几种 Java虚拟机实现技术的缺点 ,提出了在嵌入式 Java芯片内核 JC40 1中采用瘦型 JIT的设计思想 ,通过对 JIT的硬件支持和相关软件的配合 ,达到减少 JIT运行时间和内存开销 ,获得高效的 Java性能与较好的性能价格比的目标 ,然后具体介绍了 JC40 1内核的总体结构与主要技术特点 ,进行了性能分析与评估 ,证明了设计思想的正确性 ,最后举例说明 JC40 1具有很好的市场前景 .
