The study explored the developmental characteristics of preschoolers' English phonological awareness,letter knowledge,and oral vocabulary.122 preschoolers aged 3-6 from two general kindergartens were tested individually with Tests of Emerging Literacy.The results showed that(1)Significant age differences existed in the development of the preschoolers' phonological awareness,letter knowledge,and oral vocabulary.(2)There were two obvious levels in the development of preschoolers' letter knowledge;the children in the bottom and middle classes belonged to the lower level,and the children in the top class belonged to the relatively higher level.(3)In each age stage,the developmental level of receptive vocabulary was significantly higher than that of the expressive vocabulary.

Early language learning experience has some significant effects on the development of phonological awareness. This paper makes a critical survey of the literature. Those learning experiences examined include nursery rhymes, language skills, letter knowledge (pinyin learning), teaching methods of word recognition and writing knowledge.
