This essay traces the development of English and American postmodernist fiction and analyzes its most distinctive features of language autonomy, self reflexive techniques and ontological approach to the fictional world. It discusses the technical experimentations of such postmodernists as Lawrence Durell, B.S. Johnson and Thomas Pynchon while commenting on the aesthetics of metafiction, Yuppie fiction and cybernetic fiction.

Theorists have tried to define plot again, but in vain and inadvertently fallen in a dilemma. 本文讨论了三种不同的人物观 :现实主义作家说人物是人 ,现代主义作家说人物是人格 ,而后现代主义作家说人物是影子。现代主义小说中的人物塑造重点已不在其外部描写 ,也不在道德或心理特征的刻画 ,而在其社会心理甚至生理本体的不确定。character原本就有“标记”的意思 ,如今在后现代主义作家的笔下显然是个影子 ,读者无法辨认之下只好参与人物塑造了。
