The VFA in the ruminal fluid can be extracted completely by mixing it with chloroform containing an acid adsorbent and also crotonic acid as an internal standard.It takes less than 10 minutes to complete the whole procedure—from the preparation of the samples to the determination of the total molor equivalent and molar proportions of VFA. The efficiency of recovery of main VFA reaches 99.51—100.40%Experiments were made on four diary goats. The results showed that the data obtained coincided in the main with those obtained from distillation analysis which had been used routinely in our laboratory for several years and with those obtained in the researches made in other countries.

It could hardly maintain the nutritional demand of animals. However, when supplemented with appreciable amounts of urea and ammonium sulfate, the concentration of ammonia-N,trichloroacetic acid preciptated protein (TCA-P) and volatile fatty acids (VFA)increased greatly, with the ruminal metabolism apparantly improved. The level of metabolism in the rumen went up continuously when corn flour and sodium humate were added.During experimental period the percentage of propionic acid in the rumen was rather high, averaging 29.53+0.39, although the concentration of total VFA was very low, and no valic acid and isovalic acid appeared.On the 12th day after adding NPN in diet, the utilization of nitrogen in the rumen of buffaloes was increased significantly, and then sustained in a fairly constant level, showing the adaptive process of microbial population in the rumen.
