This paper described a well designed cryoneurosurgical machine, the temperature of its probes can be displaied, recorded and automa- tically controlled during neurosurgical operation. It can also be used in physiological experiment or for infliction of lesions. A series of spe- cial probes have been developed which are well vacuum-insulated except at the tip. The interior of the tips of those probes is provided with temperature sensors and heating devices. The temperature of the tipes can be set and automatically...

It can also be used in physiological experiment or for infliction of lesions. A series of spe- cial probes have been developed which are well vacuum-insulated except at the tip. The interior of the tips of those probes is provided with temperature sensors and heating devices. The temperature of the tipes can be set and automatically controlled in the range of +4- -196℃ at will. It has been proved clinically that by using this machine, those ill-defined gliomas of brain can be made more demarcated from its surrounding tissue by consolidation which facilitates the complete removal of the tumour en bloc and lessening the bleeding guite mar- kedly duryng the operation. By changing different suitable cryoprobes, this machine can also be used for many other cryotherapeutic purposes in different medical departments.

A vacuum adiabatic calorimeter has been established in our laboratory. Our result is in agreement with the literature values with the deviation not exceeding±0.3 per cent, which shows our calorimeter is reliable.The heat capacities of UO3SO4 and UO2(NO3)2. 3H2O have been measured from 60K to 300K by the above-mentioned calorimeter. No thermal anomalies were found. Except for a few points, the deviation of the experimental points from the smooth curves for the two compounds does not exceed ±0.2 per cent.The heat capacity,Cp0, the entropy,ST0-S00, the function, HT0-H00, andthe function- are tabulated for the two compounds from 60-300K.Selected thermodynamic functions Cp0, S0 -S00, H0 -H00 andat 298.15K are respectively 33.46 Cal· K-1·mol-1, 39.7 ± 0.4 Cal·K-1·mol-1, 5925 ± 20 Cal·mol-1, and 19.7 ± 0.2 Cal K-1 mol-1 for UO3SO4 and 76.50 Cal·K-1·mol-1,88.3± 0.9 Cal·K-1·mol-1,13282±50 Cal·mol-1 and 43.7±0.4 cal K-1 mol-1 for Uo2(NO3)2. 3H2O.THe thermodynamic properties of formation(△sf0 , △Gf0 are respectively - 127.0±0.7 Cal·K-1·mol-1 and -411 ± 9Kcal mol-1 for UO2SO4 and-333 ± 1 Ca.·K-1·mol-. and -448±4 Kca·mor-1 for UO3(NO3)3·3H3O.

In order to improve the performances of the generator, and cumulate some experiences for development and operation of future practical ones, we are working at this field. Our main objectives are to lower the requirement for liquid helium, and to increase the continuously operating lifetime of the generator. For these purposes, some critical technologies and assembles with superconducting generators have been studied and tested in our laboratory, such as rotating liquid helium transfer couplings, vacuum for heat insulation, torque tube heat exchangers, measurements in low temperature, calculations for heat transfer and so forth.
