 According to field investigation and sampling as well as in laboratory experiments,the authors studied the species diversity,phytomass and ecological effect of bryophytes in the main forest types of different altitudinal vegetation zones in Helan mountain.The results show:the mosses floor in Picea forest has the highest biomass,about 9 147.7 kg/hm2,and is 9.2 times of the total biomass of shrub and herb in the forest,and can store water to about 20 174.5 kg/hm2 in saturated condition.The vegetation of bryophytes in Helan mountain was investigation against the gradient of altitude,forests and soil types by mean of random sampling method.The main ecological factors effecting the growth and distribution of bryophytes are light intensity,relative humidity,altitude and soil pH.The dominant species including bryophytes and vascular plants in the communities can be divided into 5 ecological groups.
