The posterior silk gland cells in the silkworm, Bombyx mori, have large ramified nuclei with double membranes. Each nucleus contains a large number of nucleoli and chromatin-blocks. The later tend to migrate towards and attach to the inner nuclear membrane as the larva matures. It has been observed under the electron microscope that nuclear substances migrate through the pores into the cytoplasm. Within the cytoplasm, lamellar and vesicular rough-surfaced endoplasmic recticula (rER) appear to occupy most space,...

The posterior silk gland cells in the silkworm, Bombyx mori, have large ramified nuclei with double membranes. Each nucleus contains a large number of nucleoli and chromatin-blocks. The later tend to migrate towards and attach to the inner nuclear membrane as the larva matures. It has been observed under the electron microscope that nuclear substances migrate through the pores into the cytoplasm. Within the cytoplasm, lamellar and vesicular rough-surfaced endoplasmic recticula (rER) appear to occupy most space, with the Golgi apparatus, mitochondria, free ribosomes and polysomes scattering between them. Fibroin is synthesized by and stored temporary within the rER, and is transfered via the Golgi complex to the Golgi vacuoles which appear to contain filamentous materials under the electron microscope. These fibroin globules move to the apex of the cell and enter into the glandular lumen by the way of exocy-tosis. There are microvilli protruding from the apex of the cell, with an intima separating them from the lumen. Microtubules are also observed within the cytoplasm. Au-tophagosomes appear at late mature larval instar.No significant changes in the ultrastructures of the gland cells have been observed, as the larvae are treated with the juvenile-analog JH-3. This means that JH-3 delays cytolytic process in the cell and maintains the conformation of the cell. It accelerates fibroin biosynthesis and increases the production of fibroin.
