Owing to their complexity, these problems can not be solved analytically, but by means of photoelastic experiments (normaltemperature photoelastic, frozon and reflection methods), steel model electric-measuring experiments, the finite element calculation and the approximate calculation and analysis, instead. The effects of welding distortions and residual stresses can also be taken into account. However in their paper, only the uniaxial compression was dealt with while for ship plates the most typical load case is under a combination of biaxial compression and lateral pressure. In this paper,the mothed is generalized to handle this situation.New solutions have been derived. The effects of transverse compression and lateral pressure on the longitudinal compressive strength are also approached.
