This paper discovered that the film unstable region has upper limit and above this unstable region there is a stable region called upper sbable region through investigating film stability of vertical Jeffcott rotor supported by infinite long circular bearing. Consequently the paper developed a new way to solve film stability problem where the rotor is forced to work in the upper stable region above the unstable region. In addition,this paper recommended some meansures for improving the film stability.

This paper studies the film stability theory of the sliding bearing system with elastic support, analyzes the film stability by means of linear method followed by determining the first and second stability limit as well as a stable region, and deals with the concrete measures of improving the stability. The results confirm the existence of the upper stable region and the second unstable region. It is concluded that lower dimensionless integrated coefficient and moderate dimensionless support damping coefficient and/or higher dimensionless rotor external damping coefficient can increase the upper stable region, thus making the rotor operate in the stable region after its crossing the unstable region, which is a new approach to solve stability problem. Finally the effectiveness of the method is illustrated by a practical example.
